Set in northside Chicago, the novel "What You Don't Know" explores what happens when "new information" changes everything you believed to be true about your family. When is it best to keep the past a secret?
About the novel:
What You Don’t Know is the story of Rita Morrison and her search to find the missing truth behind her mother’s childhood in Depression Era Chicago.
Sylvie Morrison was a cold and distant mother. Her secrecy and distance translated into a lack of maternal warmth, leaving Rita to spend her childhood doing Sylvie's bidding in search of affection. As an adult, Rita is now convinced that something happened in Sylvie’s childhood that stunted her ability to nurture. But she has no proof.
Rita joins forces with her two cousins on a stealth mission to uncover the family’s missing history. The search reveals some startling facts about how the Bauer sisters spent their early years. Rita now sees Sylvie in a different light and begins to understand her for the first time.
Just as a new relationship develops between them, another secret is revealed, something even Sylvie doesn’t know. It’s about Rita’s grandmother and it shakes the family tree. Rita must decide if telling the whole truth is worth the risk of losing the new mother/daughter bond she’s formed with Sylvie.
The novel shows you can live with someone all your life and never really know
who they are, and how one piece of reality
has the power to create major shifts in the perceptions of a family.
